When we talk of squirrels, the only perception that comes to our mind is of a squirrel munching on a peanut! That proves how foody our furry little fellows are! Squirrels are the most adorable little mammals in the wild! With their bushy tail, long teeth, furry bodies, and padded feet, these mammals are highly adapted to the wild.
Squirrels have about 200 species that you can find worldwide except for Antarctica! And you can’t find them in Antarctica because of extreme temperatures! If you want to learn about red squirrels and their babies, you need to keep reading this article below!
What type of squirrel is red?
Squirrels have hundreds of types, and one of its types is the ‘red squirrel.’ Red squirrels are known in the world for their distinctive red color. Though their shade is a mixture of red, brown, black, and gray, they look more like ginger. These types of squirrels are more timid, shy, calm, and friendly than the others.
Even when all the squirrels are harmless to humans, these are probably the safest ones since they are quite shy. You can find them in America, Europe, the UK and other parts of the world. They live for around three to four years, but their life can go as long as nine years if kept in captivity. Suppose you are looking for a red squirrel, better look at coniferous trees or dense forests near urban and suburban areas!
When do the red squirrels have babies?
The red squirrels give birth to the babies in April and August every year. Some produce babies just once a year, either in August or April, while others produce two litters of babies each year. This entirely differs from female to female.
The male red squirrel takes no part in the rearing of the babies. The mother red squirrel takes care of her babies all by herself. From making the nest to feeding and protecting them until they are independent, all responsibilities are taken by the female red squirrel!
Breeding and gestation habits:
The red squirrels usually like living alone in solitary. You may only see them together during the breeding season. They have two mating periods: February/March or October/November. The dominant males always compete with the recessive ones in breeding. After the breeding, the females go through a gestation period of about 36 to 40 days. A litter of around 3-6 babies is born.
These babies are hairless, deaf, blind when born, and completely dependent on their mother for milk. They develop gradually and don’t open their eyes until one month old. After one-month-old, their fur completely develops but still depends on their mother.
After two months, they survive on mother milk, and after around 12 weeks, they finally start munching on food their mother provides them! The baby red squirrels are probably the cutest sight to look at once born! But you must be careful because mother red squirrel is usually very aggressive and protective regarding her babies’ security!
Where do the red squirrels give babies?
A mother red squirrel makes nests and dens by herself and takes care of the babies once they are born. The male only shows up for breeding and takes no part in the upbringing or security of the children. The mother squirrel looks for safe holes either in the trees, under the ground, or even in the attics of a house.
She gathers sticks from the branches of trees along with wide leaves and makes up the nest. She also collects the food and stores it at different places but always near the nest so that she can quickly pick up the food and come back to the nest.
A mother squirrel will not just make a single nest but rather make multiple ones. She does that so she can always flee if she faces any threat. A mother squirrel becomes very possessive of her babies and may attack a predator if it tries to come near them!
Do the red squirrels mate all life long?
No, the red squirrels don’t mate for life. They only breed once a year or twice. They don’t like living together and are always on their own most of the year. They only get along during the breeding season, which only happens once or twice a year. Other than this, you wouldn’t see red squirrels together. They live for around three to five years in the wild and roughly mate four to eight times in their lifetime.
